About The Mayan

The Mayan was commissioned by oil magnate Edward Doheny and opened in 1927. The venue is a notable example of Mayan Revival architecture, featuring elaborate pre-Columbian-inspired decorative elements. Doheny built The Mayan as well as the adjacent Belasco Theatre. The theaters were supposed to be the new heart of a theater district, a location chosen for its proximity to Doheny’s home and downtown LA.7

The Mayan served many different purposes over the following decades, hosting burlesque shows, concerts, comedy shows, actor workshops, and more. It has also been a popular filming location, appearing in both movies and music videos.7
